It was great to see a brand new record for the number of concurrent listeners on DI.fm/SKY.fm today. That is pretty insane actually.  Now that college season is back by the end of August, things have started to pick up as they always do., and new channels are already lining up to be launched for the next round.

I took a look at the bandwidth rates and it showed me that it was easily pushing over 5Gbits/sec of traffic. Without bandwidth donations if one was to pay for all the traffic out of pocket it would cost 60-80 thousand dollars per month, and that’s at a decent rate. Throw some peering into there maybe save 10k/month or more, depending on how you do it. Then again, if it wasn’t for bandwidth donations (especially from one specific one) the whole thing would be wired totally differently for AAC Plus (AAC HE) format and would save half the money right then and there.
